The AFC Wimbledon Business Club staged a completely different kind of event on Monday – a fantastic comedy night!
Around 40 members attended an evening of entertainment compared by comedian Jon Pearson, who introduced three acts as part of the ‘Comedy Round Mine’ nights, events staged regularly at the venue in the heart of Wimbledon. Before the comedy started, Sebastian from Kababji UK served up tasty treats for members, and this was followed by speeches by AFC Wimbledon’s Commercial Director Ivor Heller and New Wimbledon Theatre Manager Nick Parr.
Ivor talked passionately about the significance of being back at the venue where the Business Club launched in 2017 and he revealed details about a further link-up between AFC Wimbledon and New Wimbledon Theatre.
“We’ve always done stuff over the years with New Wimbledon Theatre and we’ve formed a good relationship with Nick Parr. We launched the Business Club here and it feels like a lifetime ago! The Business Club is growing and growing, we’ve had six new members join us in the last two months. We are adding, on average, two new members a month and as we get closer to the new stadium I expect that to keep growing.
“Everyone enjoys our nights out! We work hard to make our monthly meetings individual events that everyone is going to enjoy. We’ve staged a variety of different events and tonight we’ve got 40 or so people along to enjoy a comedy night.
“We will be having a pantomime for AFC Wimbledon with players and staff involved and there will be discounts for supporters to attend. It will be for the pantomime that’s on at New Wimbledon Theatre every year, held on Sunday 15 December. The message to fans will be to come along to the pantomime for a special AFC Wimbledon edition of it. It will be great fun.
“Lots of people here are invested in our move back to a new stadium and last week the steel framework signalled the start of building for the West Stand. It’s a weird feeling to see the new stadium starting to be built, but I can’t tell you how excited I am personally. We’re all looking forward to seeing that through to completion for about this time next year. In about 11 months we should be walking through those doors and that’s just incredible.”
It’s been great to be so involved with the Business Club and all the different kind of events. I’ve heard about the AFC Wimbledon Pantomime in December and as I’m growing my beard maybe I can be Father Christmas!

While there’s been plenty of onus on having fun at the Business Club, networking with potential new clients is obviously the primary goal. New members are continuing to benefit from this, including Steve Pigott, Co-Founder and Director at Cause & Effect Creative Ltd.
“I was attracted to the business club for networking opportunities with like-minded people. There’s a good representation of the AFC Wimbledon fanbase in the club, which also adds to it. That certainly helps to get talking to people when you first join. Football is a common ground for people here.
“The Business Club event at the Crystal Palace game was the first time that I had been along. That was a good chance to watch the team. I’ve been a Wimbledon supporter for many years and I remember going to the 1-0 FA Cup win versus Man United in the 1990s, a match when Marcus Gayle scored the winner.
“Tonight’s event has been good. The comedians need to get the audience warmed up, but once that happens it becomes a good night. It’s important for people to talk to each other at these events, make that connection and understand how they can help each other out. Being able to do that without the stigma of it being a networking event is important, it’s a bit more open at these types of events. I’ve done business with two people at the club already since we joined. They have been able to help me out with services I want for my clients.”
We recently revealed RyGas as the sponsors of our Business Club and owner Ryan O’Sullivan had a double cause for celebration at the event. Just last week, RyGas received two awards at the Merton Best Business Awards 2019.
Being a pivotal part of the Business Club has helped RyGas to grow and the awards meant a lot to Ryan and dedicated team.
“Last year we got two awards and this year we won two again, including Best Customer service in a public vote, which was amazing. This was a really good one because it meant that people genuinely voted for us. It wasn’t just two or three people and we were really chuffed about that. Members of the public had to go out of their way to vote for us on the Internet.
“It’s been great to be so involved with the Business Club and all the different kind of events. I’ve heard about the AFC Wimbledon Pantomime in December and as I’m growing my beard maybe I can be Father Christmas!”
